Welcome.

Mignon Steele is an independent artist based in Bellambi NSW, Dharawal country where she lives with her partner and two teenage kids.

Mignon’s paintings express her curiosity and reverence towards biological and geological systems at work. These observations compound into implied spatial landscapes, and unfurl with echoes of microscopic and celestial organisms.
Steele paints from the place where human strangeness and the natural world intersect; from where anxieties, optimism and the awkward humour of being human all collide. While primarily a painter in practice, lately an urge to disrupt the flatness of the painting surface with carving and papier mache has emerged. A recent residency at Burnt Dirt/ Clay Wollongong has opened the window to sculptural explorations of her visual language.

Mignon’s work week is variously divided between studio practice, design with Barnacle Studio and as a casual art installer at Wollongong Art Gallery.

In 2023 she was awarded the Cooee Leven Exhibition Award at the Paddington Art Prize and will be travelling to the Tiwi Islands in August to develop work for that exhibition.
